Lead with Empathy & Positivity: Indu Sattiraju’s Relentless Growth in MedTech Leadership

What happens when life blocks the path you always dreamed of — and hands you a detour you never asked for? If you’re Indu Sattiraju, you carve out a new trail, fueled by resilience, curiosity, and an unwavering drive to contribute meaningfully to patient care.

With over 20 years of experience in medical devices and a career spanning St. Jude Medical, Abbott, Stryker, and now Intuitive, covering cardiac, neuro & surgery space,  Indu has developed deep expertise in leading multidisciplinary, high-performance teams through complex product development, successful FDA submissions, and global product launches. She has a deep passion for Program Management, drawn to its unique power to unite diverse functions in solving complex business challenges. For her, it’s both an art and a science. “As my leader says, Program Management is at the intersection of strategy and execution, and I enjoy that a lot”.

🌸 “I Always Wanted to Be a Doctor”

Indu’s story begins like many young girls in India — with a dream of becoming a doctor. But fate, in the form of bureaucratic rules and a transferable job, had other plans.

“I missed my medical college seat because of state eligibility criteria,” she recalls. “I was devastated.”

That roadblock, however, didn’t stop her. On a reluctant nudge from her mother, she pursued instrumentation and electrical engineering, all while quietly harbouring plans to circle back to healthcare. She eventually landed a seat at USC’s Biomedical Engineering program in the U.S., seeing it as the perfect opportunity to blend her engineering background with her passion for medicine.

Landing a research assistantship at USC is highly competitive — but Indu was determined. She reached out to over 100 professors with persistence and humility, and through that effort, secured a full research assistantship, a pivotal moment that set the foundation for her medtech journey.

💥 Building a Leadership Path in MedTech

From her early days as a process engineer at St. Jude Medical to leading major endoscopy product launches at Stryker, Indu gradually discovered her natural gravitation toward leadership roles.

“I realized my strength wasn’t in inventing a new product — it was in solving complex business problems by bringing diverse teams together,” she reflects.

She considers herself very fortunate to have had excellent mentors and managers at every stage. She credits her time in systems engineering at Abbott as pivotal for providing her with “big picture thinking” and a sound engineering foundation for her eventual path to program management.

Her time at Stryker, where she led the flagship endoscopy camera system project — a product critical to the business unit’s success — was career-defining. The complex, multi-year hardware-software platform demanded tremendous grit, resilience, and people leadership to navigate constant challenges. It ultimately resulted in a very successful next-generation endoscopy camera system and earned her the coveted Total Performance Award for Best Manager.

🔥 For Indu, Leadership is an Act of Service

What makes Indu’s leadership style distinctive isn’t just operational rigour — it’s her investment in people.

“Leadership is about advocacy. It’s about keeping teams motivated, helping them believe in what they’re building, and celebrating their contributions along the way,” she says.

She’s known for creating tight-knit, empowered teams where individuals feel seen, supported, and proud of their work. At Intuitive Surgical, where she leads a high-impact business unit’s program management team, she continues to champion a people-first leadership style — one rooted in empathy, optimism, and clear expectations.

🔥 Why Empowerment is Action, Not a Buzzword

When asked what empowerment means to her, Indu’s answer is clear:

“It means creating opportunities — for yourself and others — to lead, learn, and leave a mark. Empowerment isn’t just about cheering people on; it’s about giving them real chances to rise.”

And for Indu, the true measure of leadership is how many others you lift as you climb.
